When users first sign up for a Facebook account, entering an email address is one of the required fields. Not only does it keep users informed of important updates, changes, and notifications, but it facilitates login attempts and provides a means of recovering a locked or hacked account.
But while having a linked email address has its benefits, it’s equally important to keep all contact details up to date in order to stay on top of account security. If you keep an outdated email address linked to your account, you may find your account open to hacking attempts and can have trouble recovering access to an account that you’ve been locked out of.
To help users enhance the security of their account, we’ve created this guide to removing an email address – making sure that every corner of your Facebook account is protected behind up to date and relevant information.
5 Steps to Remove an Email Address From Your Facebook Account
- Click on the menu button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen
- Select ‘Settings and Privacy’ then ‘Settings’, before heading into your ‘Accounts Centre’ at the top of the menu
- Click on ‘Personal Details’ then ‘Contact Info’
- Select your Email Address window
- To delete an email address, click on the ‘Delete Email Address’ button
Once deleted, you will be asked to add a new email address as part of your Facebook verification and security set-up.
If you remove your email address and do not add a new one, it becomes even more important to check that the phone number is correct. This protects you from being locked out of your account with no way of recovering your account access.
We hope this helps. Facebook prides itself on the various processes designed to protect users and optimise their security, with an updated email address just one important stepping stone in keeping your account safe and locked from hackers.
