If you’ve been sent a link to something on Facebook, but you don’t have an account of your own, you might assume that you won’t be able to see the post or page that you’ve been sent.
Well, this isn’t strictly true.
If the post, page, or piece of content that you’ve been sent a link to is public, then the chances are you will be able to both open and view and Facebook post or content. If the link clicks through to a private page or profile, then you will not.
Understanding Facebook’s Privacy Settings
Facebook gives users the option to make both their profile and their individual content updates and uploads public or private. Any content that they set to ‘Private’ can only be viewed by Facebook friends, whereas content that’s set to ‘Public’ visibility can be viewed by anyone.
So, if you want to view some Facebook content without an account of your own, the first thing to understand is that you will only be able to view content which is set to public. And this isn’t just true of those without an account; it’s also true for those who want to view content which has been posted by someone they’re not friends with. If the content is ‘Private’ then you won’t be able to view it, even if you have an account.
Should You Create an Anonymous Profile?
The reasons behind not wanting a Facebook account differ from person to person. If it’s a matter of personal privacy but you still want to view Facebook content, you may wish to create an anonymous account for browsing but not engaging with other users.
Again, the privacy settings explained above will hamper any desire to view ‘Private’ content or updates, but you will be able to see any content and view any page which is set to ‘Public’.
Are There Any Bypasses to Having an Account?
There are some things that you can view on a limited basis without a Facebook account, by clicking on a direct Facebook browser link. However, many links will open with a page asking you to sign in.
If Facebook visibility and access is something you need on a regular basis, our advice is to create an account and then utilise the privacy settings to keep your personal information safe and secure. Being on Facebook and having an account doesn’t have to mean that others can see everything you post – but it will enable you to open the content and view the posts from those who you’re friends with.
