A Facebook check-in is a post that you share with your friends, that lets them know where you are at the time of posting – or where you were when specific photos that you’re sharing were taken.
The benefit of checking in rather than simply mentioning the location, is that it creates a clickable link for others to discover that location. When you check in, you tag and connect your post with the establishment or location’s own Facebook page – boosting their visibility at the same time.
In this article, we’re sharing the process of how to check-in in just a few short steps.
5 Steps to Check in on Facebook
- Open your Facebook app and tap in the box at the top of your home screen which reads ‘What’s On Your Mind?’
- A ‘Create Post’ page will appear, inviting you to share a status update, share photos, add a video, or Check-in. Select ‘Check-in’
- The check in feature will use your current location if this tool is enabled or will open a series of recommended locations that you have visited in the past. You can select a location from the list, use your current location tool to identify where you are, or search specifically for a location or premises that you want to tag
- If Facebook finds the location you are searching for, it will appear in the search results – alongside a total number of previous check-ins and your current proximity to that location
- Once you tap the location you want to check-in at, Facebook will let you choose your activity (based on data it has on the location – for example, a restaurant’s main activity will be ‘Eating’) and then type something about your experience
Once you’re through to the final edits page, it is up to you to personalise and tailor your check-in post.
Some of the ways that you can do this include showing or hiding a map of the location, adding photos, tagging other users and friends, and typing a comment about where you are.
As check-ins often double as reviews for locations and attractions, the more you add to the check-in box, the better! And there you have it, a quick and easy way of personalising your next update to let users and friends know where you’ve been and what you’ve been up to.
