The green light on Facebook is an indicator to other users that you are online and active.

Linked to your ‘Active Status’ this light appears as a green dot on your profile picture, that can be seen on both the main Facebook app and the Messenger app.

Of course, this information is not always something that you want to share. Sometimes, having your green active status light switched on causes other users to expect fast replies, and sets unrealistic expectations as to how often you are on Facebook and when you are able to respond.

Which leads us to ask… how do you turn off the green light ‘Active Status’ on Facebook, and hide when you are online from other users?

What Is the Green Light on Facebook?

The green light on Facebook is a green dot that sits to the side of your profile picture.

It lets other users know that you are online and active at that moment.

3 Steps to Turn off Active Status

  1. In the Facebook app, click on the menu button in the bottom right hand corner
  2. Select ‘Settings and Privacy’ then ‘Settings’
  3. Underneath the ‘Audience and Visibility’ heading in your Settings menu, click on ‘Active Status’

Once in the active status menu, you will see a toggle and the label ‘Show When You’re Active’. If you want to turn off the green light attached to your profile, then make sure that this toggle is switched to off.

You can change this back at any time, depending on how visible you want your time online to be.

We hope this helps!
