Creating an Account in a Web Browser
Head into the web browser on your mobile or PC device and navigate to the Facebook website.
Underneath the sign in option, select ‘Create New Account’ then ‘Get Started’.
The first thing you need to provide is your name, then your date of birth (which Facebook uses to determine which features you can and should be exposed to as part of its commitment to community safety).
You will be asked for your gender and then a mobile number which is used for account recovery and as a verification check if you need to make changes to privacy settings and more in your account.
Once you’re up and running with all the basic account details filled in, you can upload a profile picture and start searching for and adding friends.
NOTE: Providing Facebook with your mobile number is a good starting point when searching for friends on Facebook, as the platform can search for any profiles that match the numbers in your contacts.
Creating an Account in the App
If you have downloaded the app but don’t already have a Facebook profile, then you will find the process to be much the same as above.
If you are already active on the Facebook app with an account and are looking to create a new account, you can do so by following these steps:
- Open your app and click on the ‘Menu’ button in the bottom right hand corner of your screen
- Click on the drop down arrow next to your name at the top of the menu
- At the bottom of the list of accounts and pages you already manage, select ‘Create Facebook Profile’
This will invite you to create a new personal profile or a public page. It will also give you the option to upgrade your existing account and unlock professional tools by turning it into a business account. Depending on what you want to achieve, select the most suitable option and then fill in all the new account information as above.
