A slow motion video is a fun way to emphasise a specific movement or action in a video. Whether it’s a dog running towards the camera, a movie-inspired hair flick, or an over the top laugh, turning a snippet of footage into a slow motion video can be entertaining and incredibly memorable.

But how do you access this effect on TikTok – and do you need to film the clip in slow motion or add it as an effect during the editing process?

5 Steps to Add the Slow Motion Effect

  1. Open TikTok and select the large plus sign in the centre along the bottom of your screen
  2. Capture a new video, or upload a video that you want to add to the app using the ‘Upload’ button to the right of the capture circle
  3. Select ‘Next’ then ‘Effects’ in the drop down menu of editing options
  4. Navigate to the ‘Time’ section of effects, and then select ‘Slow-Mo’
  5. A green box will appear along the sliding scale of your video, indicating the section that will now be played in slow motion. You can drag, adjust, and move this green box to cover the portion of video that you want to adjust and set to play in slow motion, before completing your playback and finalising the video

Once you’re happy with the position of your slow motion effect, select ‘Save’ before uploading your video to TikTok. And voila! You are left with a TikTok video which is graceful, dramatic, and often comedic.

When to Use Slow Motion

Before we leave you to explore and experiment with the slow motion effect for yourself, a little inspiration to help improve your TikTok video creation.

Slow motion doesn’t have to be funny – and it doesn’t have to be reflective and emotional. This is the kind of effect that can be used to emphasise any part of a video, be it a dance move, transition, or the perfect example of comic timing captured on camera.

The only thing left to do now is capture the kind of videos that you want to watch back again and again in slow motion!
