We all know what notifications are. They let us know about new messages, new activity, and other things that we should be aware have happened since we last checked a social platform or app.
Notifications can be tailored according to your preference. Some users like to be notified directly about everything that happens on their posts and in groups that they follow, while others prefer to reserve the notifications window for only the most important updates.
On Facebook, there are two main types of notification that you can receive.
The first are in-app notifications which appear in the app’s notification box. While these may appear as a numbered window on the Facebook app logo in your device home screen, you will only see the notification when you open the app.
The second are push notifications, which pop up on your device when it is locked or when you are not actively using Facebook.
In short, a push notification is an alert that draws your attention to something that has happened on Facebook, regardless of what you are doing on your device at the time. This is arguably the best way of ensuring that you never miss a message or comment that may occur on Facebook when you are not actively using the app. However, push notifications are not for everyone.
How to Turn Push Notifications Off
In order to turn off push notifications on Facebook and keep all alerts contained within the app, you need to follow these steps…
- Click on the menu button in the bottom right hand corner of your app screen
- Select ‘Settings and Privacy’ then ‘Settings’
- Scroll down and click on ‘Notifications’
- At the top of the Notifications menu, you will see a toggle to ‘Mute Push Notifications’
Turning this toggle on will mute all push notifications and stop them from coming through on your device. You can switch this toggle on for a set period of time or leave it on indefinitely.
Underneath this main toggle, you can individually tailor your notification settings for different activities in the app, further personalising your experience so that you only see the alerts that you want to see and that you are interested in.
We hope this helps. Push notifications add value for some users – however, for others they are invasive and can prove annoying. How you choose to manage them is up to you as a Facebook user.
