Facebook Messenger may be accessed via a standalone app on modern smartphones, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t intrinsically linked with the parent platform.

In fact, what most users don’t realise is that in order to deactivate and come off of Facebook Messenger, you first need to deactivate your Facebook account.

In this article, we’re taking you through the process of deactivating Facebook Messenger on the assumption that you have already taken steps to close and remove your Facebook account. If you haven’t already done this, you need to head into your Account Centre to deactivate your main account before moving on to Messenger.

5 Steps to Deactivate Messenger

  1. Open your Messenger app and click on the three horizontal lines icon in the top left hand corner
  2. Select the cog wheel in the top right hand corner of the pop up menu
  3. Tap on ‘Accounts Centre’ then ‘Personal Details’
  4. Choose the option which reads ‘Account Ownership and Control’ then choose ‘Deactivation or Deletion’
  5. This will open a menu to deactivate or delete any connected accounts under your Meta profile – often including both Facebook and Instagram. Select the Facebook option and confirm the actions to deactivate your account

Deactivated accounts can be reactivated by logging back in using your standard Facebook username and password. It is important for users to note that a deactivated account removes your profile and messenger status from the platforms of other users but does not delete your account permanently.

Rather, the deactivation option is a good choice for those who want to reduce their usage of Facebook and Messenger but who may want to return to the platform at a later date.

We hope this helps!
