The first and most important place to start with this article is that you can only archive a Facebook Group that you own or are the admin for. You cannot choose to archive a group that you don’t have ownership of and control over.
Now that’s out of the way, let’s take a closer look at the process of archiving a group that you no longer have time for or that isn’t performing as you wanted it to…
Why Archive a Facebook Group?
To start with the ‘why’ of archiving a Facebook Group; there are plenty of reasons why you might choose to archive a group.
One of the most common is that the group is simply no longer relevant to you and to its members.
You may also find that a group you previously managed has been displaced by a new group, and that you no longer have a need for the old one. Archiving and removing it from members’ feeds avoids confusion and ensures that they only ever interact with the correct group.
And then there’s the fact that groups require hands-on management – something that you may not have time for. Archiving the group removes the responsibility you hold as group admin.
Here’s how to do it.
5 Steps to Archive a Group
- Click on the menu button in the bottom right hand corner of your screen on Facebook
- Click on the ‘Groups’ content block and then select the group that you want to archive
- Under the profile and cover photo, select ‘Manage’
- Scroll down until you find ‘Group Settings’ and click on this menu item
- Scroll right down to the bottom of the settings menu and select the red text reading ‘Archive Group’
And voila! Archiving a group will not completely remove it from your group members’ Facebook accounts, and they will still be able to view the existing posts and content. However, an archived group can no longer be expanded in membership or added to, removing the ability of users to create and share new content in the group feed.
We hope this helps!
