Do you run, own, or manage a charitable organisation?
Is your organisation or charity on Facebook?
If so, then this is the article for you. And if you aren’t, then keep reading anyway because this article is all about the underlying value of charitable Facebook pages and how they can help support your cause.
How Does the Facebook Give Button Work?
The Facebook Give or Donate button taps into the idea of Facebook being a platform that’s great for raising awareness and spreading the word about specific causes. Because Facebook is an intrinsically sociable platform, users are drawn towards content that they find interesting and enticing and will follow pages that they can relate to or want to support.
The Donate (or Give) button is there to give users a very proactive way of supporting a cause, through its own dedicated Facebook page. It gives users a quick and easy way of taking that next step to support a charity or cause, without having to leave the social platform.
Where to Find the Give Button
The Give or Donate button is typically located next to the header of the page, next to the ‘Like’ button and in place of a ‘Contact Now’ or ‘Find Out More’ button.
It is, from a Facebook design point of view, the Call-To-Action button that every page has access to and can use as they please. However, there are several rounds of approval that charities need to go through in order to get this button and the payment system connected with their page. It is not a feature that’s available to any page – rather, you have to verify and prove your charity status first.
How to Add a Give Button to Your Facebook Page
Feeling confident that you’ve got all the information you need to prove your cause is deserving of a ‘Donate’ button? If so, then here’s the process for adding the button to your page…
- Navigate to your Facebook page and make sure that you are logged in on Page Edit mode as a member of admin
- Click on the three dots button underneath your cover photo
- From the Page Settings menu that appears, select ‘Add Action Button’
- Click ‘Edit Button’
- If you are registered and have already been approved as a charity page, you will see an option to make this button a ‘Donate’ button
Once you have requested for this button to be added to your page, you will need to meet criteria laid out by Facebook. This includes:
- Your Facebook page must fall into the categories of a charitable or nonprofit organisation
- The person applying for the Facebook donate button must have admin permissions
- Your page must meet Facebook community standards and regulations
Donation payouts will also need to be made to a verified bank account every other week. This information will need to be submitted to Facebook for verification.
Once the above has been approved, you will need to set up a donations account on Facebook in order for the donations to be collected, safely stored, and then paid out to your bank account.
Finally, when you have an approved charity page and the payments account set up, you will be given the option to confirm the Donate button on your page.
If nothing else, we hope this proves the value of the Facebook Donate button – and the work that goes into ensuring that only valid and eligible charities and nonprofits are able to collect money from users via this method. Happy donating!
